Viking / Vikingo

Vikings are usually represented as very big warriors with long ginger beard and a horn helmet.  They were famous for being fierce and ruthless but this character seems to be enjoying some peace and quiet on a solitary fishing trip. The body is a dome shape cake and his design uses a variety of texturing techniques that almost bring the Viking to life. You can accompany this project with the funny catch of the day fish shaped biscuits as shown in the book "Animation in Sugar: Take 2"

Los vikingos son representados por lo general como grandes guerreros, con largas barbas rojas y cascos con cuernos. Eran conocidos por su violencia y agresividad pero este personaje parece disfrutar de un día de pesca de forma tranquila y pacífica. El cuerpo de este vikingo es una tarta en forma de cúpula y en el diseño se han empleado varias técnicas para dar diferentes texturas de tal manera que el personaje parece cobrar vida. Este proyecto se puede acompañar con las galletas en forma de pez que aparecen en el libro "Animation in Sugar: Take 2".

To have and to Hold / Por siempre juntos

A modelled bride and groom have been a favourite wedding cake topper for decades, so I wanted to give this design a contemporary twist by creating a pose where the figurines face each other. Elio and I have also worked on the style by accentuating the square, masculine lines of the groom and the soft flowing lines of the bride.

Both of my books of “Animation in Sugar” have wedding couples. Which one do you like the most?

Una de las figuras más tradicionales en el mundo del modelado de figuras de azúcar son las parejas de novios para decorar las tartas nupciales. En este caso quería dar un giro en el diseño y crear una pose donde las figuras se miraran frente a frente. Elio y yo también trabajamos en el estilo y quisimos acenturar las líneas cuadradas masculinas para el novio mientras que la novia tiene unas líneas más suaves. Los dos libros de Animación en Azúcar cuentan con una pareja de novios entre los proyectos. ¿Cuál es vuestra preferida?

Solar Superhero / Super Héroe Solar

On the pages of “Animation in Sugar: Take 2” you can find this Superhero figurine that seems to defy gravity. Children will like this character especially if they are fans of comics and sci-fi movies. The project also shows how to use airbrush colours to make vivid scenes and achieve a real depth of colour. You can use the same modelling techniques to make other famous Superheroes or to create your personal one!

En las páginas de “Animation in Sugar: Take 2” podéis encontrar la figura de este Superheroe que parece estar desafiando la gravedad. A los niños les encantará este personaje especialmente si les gustan los comics y las películas de ciencia ficción. El proyecto  también muestra cómo utilizar el aerógrafo para colorear y conseguir  profundidad. Se pueden utilizar las mismas técnicas de modelado de este proyecto para realizar otros superheroes famosos ¡o incluso para crear el tuyo propio!

Santa's Little Helpers / Los pequeños ayudantes de Papa Noel

Christmas is approaching and these cheerful elves have already started to work getting Santa’s sleigh ready to deliver presents. This project from “Animation in Sugar: Take 2” offers you a great opportunity to play with facial expressions using one simple head shape. You can also make each elf distinct by adding little details such as fringe or a goatee beard, so use your imagination and don’t be afraid to experiment! I’m sure the elves will have everything ready by Chirstmas Eve and bring you all lots of presents!

Se acercan las navidades y estos simpáticos duendes ya han empezado a trabajar para dejar el trineo de Papa Noel preparado para repartir los regalos. Este proyecto de “Animation in Sugar: Take 2” ofrece la posibilidad de trabajar con expresiones faciales a partir de una simple cabeza, cambiando pequeños detalles de cada duende como el flequillo, la perilla etc. Utilizad vuetra imaginación y no tengáis miedo de experimentar. Estoy seguro de que los duendes tendrán todo listo para la noche de Navidad y espero que os traigan muchos regalos.

Zombie

Perfect for Halloween, this creepy cake would also make a spook-tacular birthday treat for fans of horror movies! The sophisticated use of colour and shading on this design creates areas of light and dark, making it appear as if the zombie figure is being struck by moonlight.

You will find this zombie in my book “Animation in Sugar: Take 2” along with another cute character perfect for Halloween: Nancy in her witch costume. Ready for going out trick or treat?

Esta tarta coronada por un terrorifico zombi es el diseño perfecto para Halloween o para aquellos a los que les gusten las peliculas de miedo. El uso del color y las sombras de este diseño crea un efecto en el que el personaje parece estar iluminado por la luz de la luna.

The Slim Geisha is one of my most popular and well-known characters but, the “Tea Ceremony” project has a second figurine: this rounded little geisha that perfectly complements her tall and slender counterpart.

La Geisha es uno de mis personajes mas populares y conocidos pero el proyecto de la ceremonia del té tiene un segundo personaje: esta geisha más pequeña y regordita que complementa perfectamente a su compañera alta y delgada.

Flying Pig / Cerdito volador

This cute piggy pilot is one of my favourite characters included in “Animation in Sugar: Take2” The fun and colourful cartoon style of this cake makes it great for children’s birthday parties. This cake is a reminder that the sky’s the limit when it comes to being imaginative with your sugar modelling skills.

Este gracioso cerdito piloto es uno de mis personajes favoritos del libro “Animation inSugar: Take 2”. El diseño y estilo de dibujo animado lo convierten en una tarta muy divertida, ideal para fiestas de cumpleaños. El cerdito volador surca los cielos sin límites, como tampoco ha de tener límites nuestra imaginación a la hora de modelar. 

Animation in Sugar: Take 2

After writing my first book, Animation in Sugar, I was still full of ideas for exploring modelled figurines and decorated cakes for different occasions. I wanted to put together a second book of new ideas and modeling techniques as well as presenting some of my favourite characters which had become popular with students and people who had started to follow me online.

I am proud to present my second book to you and hope it encourages and inspires you to explore your own artistic skills through baking and decorating.

Después de escribir my primer libro, Animación en Azúcar, todavía quedaban muchas ideas de distintas figuras en azúcar por explorar y decorar tartas para diferentes ocasiones. Por eso he querido reunirlas  todas en un segundo libro con nuevas técnicas de modelado e incorporar algunos de mis personajes favoritos que ya se han hecho populares entre mis estudiantes y entre toda la gente que me sigue en Facebook.

Estoy muy orgulloso de presentarles mi segundo libro y espero que os inspire y anime a seguir explorando vuestra faceta artística a través del mundo de la repostería creativa. 

Monty, The Sheepdog / Monty, el perrito ovejero

This is one of the new projects of my second book, Animation in Sugar: Take 2 out on March 2015. Monty is an adorable Old English sheepdog puppy and is a perfect cake for anyone who has their own four-legged friend. He can be personalized to suit the recipient by changing the letter on the nametag and changing the colour of the fur. You can also find this project on Cakes & Sugarcraft Magazine, issue 128.

Éste es uno de los nuevos proyectos que aparecen en mi segundo libro, Animation in Sugar: Take 2, a la venta a partir de Marzo 2015. Monty es un adorable perro ovejero convertido en tarta ideal para todos los amantes de estos animales. El proyecto se puede personalizar cambiando la letra del collar o el color del pelo. También puedes encontrar el paso a paso para hacer esta figura en el número 128 de la revistaCakes & Sugarcraft. 

Fashionista / A la moda

The Fashionista is one of the projects I developed with my brother Elio for Animation in Sugar. Our aim was to create a stylish and delicate feminine figure highlighting the flow of her skirt. On Elio´s first sketch, a dog was walking next to the girl but by the time the figurine was finished, I felt that there was no need to make it as the girl on her own was enough to tell a story. After struggling to get human like legs without a satisfying result, I ended up with an easier abstract shape to give a slender look when seeing from the front.

El personaje de la Fashionista es uno de los proyectos que desarrollé junto con mi hermano Elio para el libro Animación en Azúcar. Nuestro objetivo fue crear una figura femenina delicada y estilizada, destacando el movimiento de su falda. En el primer boceto de Elio aparecía un perro caminando con este personaje  pero en el momento en que terminé de modelar a la chica, me di cuenta de que no era necesario para contar la historia que quería. Después de dar muchas vueltas a la forma de hacer las piernas de tal forma que parecieran lo más humanas posibles, me decanté por una forma abstracta muy simple pero que otorga a la figura de una apariencia esbelta si se mira de frente. 

Just Married

The idea of making a bride and groom for the wedding cake has been around for decades, so my brother Elio and I really enjoyed creating a contemporary couple. We based the outfit on the actual dress and suit of the newlyweds, so you can change the outfits for the recipients. To make this wedding couple I have used a technique which I call ‘3D collage’. This technique is perfect for making a figure with correct proportions: simply follow the templates provided as a guide to get the length and size required for each individual piece. You will find the step by step and templates for this project on my book Animationin Sugar.

La tradición de decorar una tarta con una pareja de novios ha estado vigente desde hace décadas. Tanto mi hermano Elio como yo quisimos presentar una idea un poco más contemporánea basándonos en la vestimenta de los destinatarios. En este proyecto se ha utilizado una técnica que he denominado “collage en 3D”. Dicha técnica nos permite lograr las proporciones adecuadas de cada parte de nuestras figuras siguiendo las plantillas como guía. Podrás encontrar tanto las plantillas como el paso a paso de este proyecto en mi libro Animaciónen Azúcar.
