Granny´s Kitchen / La cocina de la Abuela

This is one of the projects from my book Animation in Sugar. I tried to re-create the memory I have of my granny, my sister and my brother making a cake together in my granny´s hometown, Máximo Paz, in Argentina. The cake had to be made under her strict supervision so we wouldn´t forget any of the steps required to ensure its success. I still remember the smell of her walnut cake baking in the oven which was to be finished with a lovely rich buttercream filling and a creamy chocolate coating. The cake in this project is the Granny's skirt. Although is made for a few servings you can display these figurines on a bigger cake if necessary.

Este es uno de los proyectos de mi libro Animación en Azúcar. En él, he intentado recrear el recuerdo que tengo de mi abuela y mis hermanos cuando éramos niños haciendo juntos una tarta en la localidad de Máximo Paz, en Argentina. La tarta siempre se hacía bajo la estricta supervisión de mi abuela, quien se aseguraba de que no nos saltáramos ningún paso para que el resultado fuera perfecto. Todavía recuerdo el aroma de su tarta de nueces, con un riquísimo relleno de crema de mantequilla y cobertura de chocolate. La tarta de este proyecto es la falda de la abuela. Aunque está hecha para servir varias porciones, también se pueden colocar todas las figuras en una tarta de mayor tamaño si es necesario. 

Mother and baby / Madre con su bebé

“Mother and baby”, and “Cats in love” are my two projects for Squires Kitchen’s new book “The Art of Sugarcraft”, out now. In this piece I wanted to reflect the sense of tenderness between a mother and her child. To make the head, I used the ballerina head mould and played around with that basic face shape in order to achieve different features and facial expressions. This project is also a great way to practice dressing a human character. In this figurine, the mother’s legs are slightly curved to give movement to the piece. Hope you find this method a useful and effective way to speed up the modelling process.

“La mamá y su bebé”, y “los gatitos enamorados” son mis dos colaboraciones para el nuevo libro de Squires Kitchen “The Art of Sugarcraft”, ya a la venta. Con esta figura he intentado reflejar el sentimiento de cariño y amor entre una madre y su bebé. Para hacer la cabeza de la mamá he utilizado el molde de la bailarina para luego modificarla y conseguir así diferentes expresiones faciales. Además, este proyecto es ideal para aprender a vestir una figura con pasta de azúcar. Las piernas de la madre son ligeramente curvas para dar un sentido de fluidez y movimiento a todo el conjunto.

A classic cartoon character / Un personaje clásico

“The Pink Panther” in sugar.  A classic, old time favourite that has entertained both children and adults alike. This is my first attempt at making The Pink Panther and there are still a few tweaks I’d like to make to it. However, I think it’s better to start with something than leave it as an idea, lost, up in the clouds. Thankfully, it wasn’t as difficult as I’d expected. My next step is to play around with different facial expressions and postures. Why not try this at home and see how it goes?!

“La pantera Rosa” en azúcar; un clásico de todos los tiempos que ha divertido a niños y adultos. Este es mi primer intento de modelado con pasta de azúcar y todavía hay modificaciones que me gustaría llevar a cabo pero lo bueno es que no fue tan difícil como pensaba. El siguiente paso es probar nuevas expresiones faciales y posturas. ¿Por qué no intentar modelar este conocido personaje en casa y ver cómo sale? 

Little jumping girl / Niña saltando

“Manga” style is one of my favourites for I can exaggerate and stretch facial expressions and body proportions at will without either losing the cuteness of the character or having to follow human proportions.  The latter sometimes restricts creativity so I prefer to play with proportions freely. I placed the little girl on a pastillage bedside cabinet to give a sense of lightness and motion to the whole piece.

I am sure that this scene is reminiscent of our own childhood, a time when there were no rules or limits when playing around the house. A piece of furniture was always at hand to trigger our own imagination and transform it into so many things. 

El estilo manga es uno de mis favoritos ya que ofrece la posibilidad de exagerar las expresiones faciales y jugar con las proporciones del cuerpo, otorgándonos así una gran libertad creativa. De esta forma, se consiguen personajes graciosos sin la necesidad de regirnos por las proporciones clásicas. Siguiendo dicho estilo, modelé esta niña saltando sobre un mueble hecho de pastillaje para dar ligereza y movimiento a toda la escena.

Estoy seguro de  que esta imagen nos remonta a nuestra infancia cuando a la hora de jugar, no había reglas ni límites y cualquier objeto de la casa era bueno para convertirlo en lo que nuestra imaginación quisiera.
